Small Space, Big ImpactWe recently finished a new Mandarin duck display, and it has quickly become one of our favorite small habitat builds in the showroom. This piece proves that you do not need a warehouse-sized space to create something truly special.A Complete Little WorldThis piece was designed as a self-contained vignette—a complete little world built into a custom wood base. Inside the planter-style cabinet, we created a shallow woodland pond scene featuring:Layered gravel and river rock along the shorelineMoss-covered driftwoodAquatic plantsGlassy "water" with gentle ripples and bubblesCapturing Natural BehaviorOne Mandarin drake is captured swimming through the water, pushing a subtle wake as he glides past lily pads and duckweed. Another drake is posed perched on a weathered branch above the water line, giving the scene height and movement. The goal was to show two classic behaviors in one compact habitat—one bird in motion, one at rest, each showing off the incredible color and pattern Mandarin ducks are known for.The Artistic BackdropTo tie everything together, we added a bold decorative backdrop: a large painted fan featuring a peacock and floral artwork mounted on the tongue-and-groove wood wall behind the display. The warm wood tones, gold fan, and deep jewel colors of the ducks all work together, giving the piece a refined, almost gallery-like feel.Key Details We Focused OnRealistic water effects with depth, clarity, and surface textureCarefully placed rocks and plants to balance both sides of the baseNatural driftwood that supports the upper duck and draws the eye upwardCompact footprint so the display can fit in an office, entryway, or small lobby
